San Marcos, Texas is located in Central Texas in Hays County. The City of San Marcos also spans into the counties of Caldwell and Guadalupe. San Marcos is home to nearly 70,000 residents as of the 2020 census. Located on the banks of the San Marcos River fed by Spring Lake, this area is considered to be one of the oldest continously inhabited sites in the Americas. San Marcos is also home to Texas State University (formerly known as Southwest Texas State University). 

San Marcos is considered one of the gateways to the Texas Hill Country. Located on the Balcones Fault, the hills are to the west of the city, and the Coastal Plains stretch to the east. Both the San Marcos River and the Blanco River are a portion of the Guadalupe watershed that flows through the city along with Cottonwood Creek, Purgatory Creek, Sink Creek, and Willow Springs Creek.

On the education front, San Marcos is home to Texas State University, San Marcos Academy, the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District, and Gary Job Corps (providing education and technical training opportunities).
