The Woodlands, Texas is a master-planned community located north of Houston, Texas along the I-45 corridor, and while primarily located in Montgomery County, portions of The Woodlands extends into Harris County. The population of The Woodlands according to the 2010 census is over 90,000 people.

The master-planned community of The Woodlands was conceived and development executed by oil tycoon and investor George P. Mitchell. The Woodlands was birthed in 1974 and managed by The Woodlands Corporation; an extension of Mitchell Energy & Development. The Woodlands would exchange ownership first in 1997 when acquired by Morgan Stanley and Crescent Real Estate Equities, and then Rouse Company purchased Crescent's interest in 2003. Rouse Company was bought by General Growth Properties in 2004, and then The Woodlands Development was sold to the Howard Hughes Development Corporation.

The master-planned community is divided into villages, and The Woodlands modeled other new communities across the country that could be found in Columbia, Maryland, Irvine Ranch, California, and Reston, Virginia. The Woodlands despite conversations to incorporate has continued to remain The Woodlands Township.
