Weeds...I despise them. One of the hardest things to keep up with to maintain our yard and flower beds is keeping the weeds out. This is one of the things I leverage out, and the lucky individuals are my kids. This doesn't mean that I don't have to follow up on their work.

In life and business we have weeds, and I divide weeds into two categories; people and our thoughts.

People can be the weeds in your life that choke you out. They can prevent you from growth and success if you allow them to spread their roots in your soil. They can pervade by spreading their negativity, hate, jealousy, and their desire to not see you truly succeed. If you don't believe the last one, I've personally had people tell me they hope I don't succeed. These individuals will intentionally, and at times unintentionally, plant the seeds that can become invasive in our lives and take us off our game.

What do you do with these individuals? You cut the weeds out. You spray them down with a coating...

How do you react to a situation? It matters.

Everyday there are going to be things that just don't go the way you intended. That seems to be the case a lot more lately I truly believe because of the pressure cooker environment created by the virus and geopolitical/social issues. In fact this morning, we found out that our June 2021 cruise has now been cancelled. Our family was really looking forward to this 10 day trip that left Galveston for Key West, Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau aboard the Carnival Radiance.

How did I initially react when I found out? Not well. I have to say I was disappointed. The cancellation stirred the emotions of having all the family members of our home celebrating birthdays essentially in quarantine. It got me thinking about my kids' uncertainty with what schooling is going to look like that is supposed to start August 11th. It got me thinking one more disappointment, one more frustration, and what is next.

What are you doing to stretch your mind every day? One of the things I've personally implemented in my life is attempting to learn one thing that I did not know yesterday. Fortunately access to information is in abundance, and sometimes it is figuring out what is that one new thing I want to learn.

This evening, I made the decision to give up some TV time to watch a live webinar on online lead generation and social media presence. I have to say, I learned a few new things that I was not implementing before. It is a mentality I've been working on over the last decade to be okay not knowing everything, and to approach life and understanding to approach things in curiosity. What I've experienced in this approach is the opening of new doors and opportunities.

Study What You're Passionate About Growing in Either Business or Life

Study...I can't tell you how many times this word left my mouth in the last 9 weeks of the school year that were done from home via Zoom. Some of the questions they were asking me, especially my daughter on the topic of math, I was probably not the best source. (This humors me because I was 2 or 3 classes from being a math major.) Study...go learn.

What about us as adult business owners? What about us as people in our 20's, 30's, 40's and beyond on the topic of studying? For our youth we were focused on studying, most of us, so we could make the grades to pass to the next level of education. My question: Why do most people stop studying whether it is for the benefit of growing their business, understanding and maximizing wealth, or even studying to obtain the skill sets to pick up a new instrument or language?

This reality has smacked me right between the eyes over the last couple of weeks. It is in the area building wealth through real estate investment. Now...

How many times have I seen a business owner stay in the "blocks" even after the starting gun has been fired? Many.

Jim Rohn said, "We must learn to apply all that we know so that we can attract all that we want."

Having trained and coached 100's over the years, I have always been able to pick out the person that was the most intellectual person in the room, yet their results were lackluster. See they know exactly how to run the 100 meter sprint in their head. They know everything including the pre-race mindset, the study and monitoring of the starter to anticipate the gun being fired, the form required coming out of the blocks, the form required to complete the race, the technique to lean into the finish, etc. The challenge with knowing and not applying their knowledge, metaphorically, they will never leave the blocks.

See they know everything, yet they do not apply. Yes, it is important to learn, and it is even more important to apply/execute. Many have heard that...

Over the years I was told, "Jeremy, you're not bringing enough energy. You need to be more excited. You can motivate, encourage, and help more people if you would act in this way." Guess what, it was complete BS, and for those telling me essentially not to be myself, what they don't realize is the number of people that came to thank me for my authentic relationship.

See, authenticity is what people want. They don't want a show. They want to know you truly are passionate about what you do, and that your intention is to add value...not dupe them into believing something through acting out of falsehood. People want to feel like you care about their needs and to be 100% genuine about that feeling.

I read an article today chronicling the fall of a leader that made some really poor choices. It was a reminder that as a business owner, you are always under the spotlight whether you choose to be or not.

"Everything rises and falls with leadership." - John Maxwell

Take actions based in truth and light, do the right thing, and admit when you've made a mistake. People look at business owners as mythical unicorns living in fields of clover framed by an overarching rainbow. You do something that blotches that image, and everything goes away in a snap.

Organizations, relationships, and families can all be impacted by our choices. If you think you can hide the things you're doing, at some point it will catch up to you. Just don't go down the path knowingly making bad decisions.

Be aware today that any decision you make has a consequence. Some will be favorable, and others can be destructive (BTW - this is both in business and life). This mistake made by this business...
