Words Carry Power and Emotion is Gasoline

It's a time for truth. The challenge is, as Jack would say in the movie A Few Good Men, is "You Can't Handle the Truth". The truth is that words carry power. What you say matters. How you say the words matters, and the time of when words are used matters.

Here are a couple of recent examples, and I'm interested if you can relate.

I had a person tell me right from the start of the conversation that they are a no BS, no nonsense type of person. This person did not know me, nor did I know them. There was no contextual relationship for having the conversation. Being a coach and having 1000's of hours of conversations, this person was using a tactic that I call "clearing the table".

What is "clearing the table"? It is overcoming a potential objection in the mind of someone else before the point that the objection arises in the listener's thoughts. This person said they were no BS immediately so I would trust them and not question their true intentions. "Clearing the table" means they are clearing the path to control the conversation. Being on the receiving end of someone that starts a conversation like this, you are likely to experience a lot of BS.

Another example is a vendor recently connecting with one of my clients that was seeking out information about a specific tool for their business. Nicely paraphrasing the conversation through email, which I had to read the copy twice to believe it, is the person valued their time much more than a prospective client. The vendor basically said that if you don't make a decision NOW, I am either going to toss you to my team or move on.

This example is a more sinister use of words in the way this vendor played on emotions. Basically, if you don't use our product, you must not be a smart person. If you don't value my time, then obviously you don't value your time, and that makes you a horrible business person. This vendor used the power of words combined with emotion (emotion is like gasoline) in an attempt to close a sale on someone that simply had the intention to seek out information to determine if it would be a valuable addition to their business.

The truth is words often coupled with emotion, especially around sales, might just be a weapon forged against you. You've probably heard the phrase, "kill them with honey". For those on the receiving end of the honey, you're probably thinking now that would not feel good, and you're right!

I say all of this to encourage when you're seeking out help....maybe even a coach...pay attention to the words that they are using, and while this is applicable in business, it can also be used in life to avoid the pitfalls many can fall into

Words are powerful...pay attention.

Onward and Upward,
Coach Jeremy
