Setting Expectations as a Business Owner is Essential

Setting expectations is essential...

It is amazing to me the amount of people that own a business that don't share expectations upfront with their clients/customers. Sharing expectations provides a filter to process future occurrences/obstacles in advance. Having this "newly installed" filter can now be the coping mechanism for when things might not go exactly as planned. To be honest, most things don't go as planned.

Example:

Scenario: REALTOR® that has listed a property.

Expectation Set at Listing Appointment with the Seller:

"I call all of my home sellers Mondays between the hours of 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. In this conversation, we will discuss the activity that took place with your home over the weekend including feedback, or potentially the lack of feedback which is in itself feedback. I will discuss with you the current listings and pending that could impact your home, which also might require us to reevaluate pricing if necessary. I will also address any questions or concerns you might have about the process and meeting the timeline you desire to get your home sold. Would this be okay with you?"

What will setting an expectation such as the example above do for you as the listing agent?

  1. It makes you look like a professional.
  2. It allows you to follow your schedule, and have dedicated time set aside to address your listing clients.
  3. Your clients will call you less during the week because they are expecting a call from you on Monday with the information that is important to them.
  4. Your client doesn't think. "Is my agent still alive. The last time I saw our agent was at the listing appointment."
  5. You've now created a simple system that allows you to take on a larger number of listings.

This is simple, yet powerful. Set expectations. It is to your benefit, and it also raises the service level for your customers and clients. Does this apply only to real estate? No. Any business owner that harnesses the power of setting expectations will create powerful results.

Go set some expectations today. You will be glad you did.
