Read Before Starting a Business

Small Business Coaching Real Estate Coaching Jeremy Wiliams Red Hawk Coaching

I had a great conversation with a friend this last week about whether or not to start a real estate business. My number one goal when anyone calls me about starting a business is to attempt at all costs to talk them out of the opportunity. It sounds counterintuitive, yet there is a very specific reason why I choose to lead the conversation down this path.

Over the years I've seen many individuals start a business that didn't make it. Through observation, I believe they chose starting a business for the "freedom and flexibility", which when they began to dig in realized it was a lot more work than expected. I also believe that they did not make it because the passion about the business opportunity did not exist. Their WHY was not big enough to drive them day in and day out through the mundane tasks that are required to make a business successful.

Jeremy's Success Formula: Passion + WHY + Consistency + Congruency = Success

I look at several of my friends that are business owners across the industry today, and you can see the immense amount of passion they have for what they do even in the midst of the pandemic. The new challenges and problems to solve created by the pandemic is showcasing the passion they have about their businesses and the products and services they provide. When you're passionate about something, and your back is against the wall, you find a solution to the challenges that are in front of you (realizing some things are in your control and some are not).

Here are some questions you might ask yourself if contemplating starting a business:

1. Am I truly passionate about BEING a business owner?

2. WHY am I choosing to own a business?

3. What will it COST me to start a business? (Don't consider only the monetary costs.)

4. WHO are the people I surround myself with or seeking advice from when starting a business?

5. How can HIRING A COACH help me navigate the waters to increase my likelihood of success?

It is important that when you make that decision to move forward, you're not dipping your toe in the water. You've got to be 100% committed. Falling down only means getting back up and going forward again. If that mindset doesn't exist, owning a business might not be right for you. It is not easy; I can testify to that. Yet, waking up everyday to new challenges, new opportunities, and the ability to raise the ceiling as high as you want to go is pretty amazing!
