Discovering the Best in the South: A Tour of University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, and University of Arkansas
As parents, watching our children grow up and prepare for their next steps in life can be both bittersweet and exciting. Recently, I had the opportunity to tour three universities with my daughter: University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, and the University of Arkansas. It was a week filled with creating lasting memories, exploring new places, and envisioning the future. Over the course of three days, we covered over 1,100 miles, walked 5 miles a day, and spent countless hours driving. But the time spent together, as we discussed her plans for the future, made it all worth it. In this blog post, I'll share our experiences and the valuable lessons we learned during our university tours.
Day 1 - The Drive
On the first leg of our trip, we drove from Houston, Texas to Norman, Oklahoma, passing through Dallas on a stormy day and night. Despite Google Maps predicting a 6-hour drive, it took us a grueling 8 and a half hours due to the heavy traffic and inclement weather. Driving through the storm, with strong winds buffeting our car at night, was an anxiety-inducing experience. However, we persevered and finally arrived in Norman, where we checked into our first hotel, the Noun, located on S. University Blvd., just across from University of Oklahoma. For a late dinner, we went to Hideaway Pizza for a cheese pizza.
Hideaway Pizza
Hideaway Pizza is a beloved pizza restaurant that has been a staple in Norman, Oklahoma, since 1957. It all began when three Oklahoma State University students, Richard Dermer, Andrew Gammill, and Ronald Baber, decided to open a pizza joint near their school. They converted a small house on Stillwater's Washington Street into a pizzeria that quickly became a hot spot for students.
As the popularity of Hideaway Pizza grew, the owners decided to expand to Norman, home of the University of Oklahoma. They opened a Hideaway Pizza in Norman in 1977, located just a few blocks from the university campus. The Norman location quickly became a favorite spot for students, locals, and visitors alike.

Their delicious pizzas, made with high-quality ingredients and secret family recipes, have won countless awards and loyal fans. Day 2 - Tour of University of Oklahoma
During our tour of University of Oklahoma, we had the opportunity to explore a variety of notable locations, including The University of Oklahoma Visitor Center, Oklahoma Memorial Union, Bizzell Memorial Library, Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, various dormitories, Sarkeys Fitness Center, the North and South Ovals, and even the iconic clock tower on the north side of campus. However, the weather during our visit was far from ideal, with persistent rain and frigid temperatures. Thankfully, the university provided ponchos, hand warmers, and coffee to make the tour more comfortable. Despite the inclement weather, the 2-hour tour was well worth it. It's worth noting that prospective visitors should be prepared for a significant amount of walking.
Sooner Schooner
The mascot of University of Oklahoma is the Sooner Schooner, a unique and beloved symbol of the university's athletic programs. The Sooner Schooner is a covered wagon that has been used as the university's mascot since the 1960s. It is pulled by two white ponies named Boomer and Sooner, and is driven around the field after each score made by the university's football team.

While the weather was still chilly, the rain began to ease up as we left Oklahoma City and made our way towards Stillwater. There, we checked into the Atherton Hotel, located on the OSU campus, and took some time to rest. Later, we visited the popular hotspot, Eskimo Joe's, just off campus, and indulged in some of their famous cheese fries along with juicy hamburgers.

After a short walk from the Atherton Hotel, we arrived at the Conoco Phillips OSU Alumni Center to check-in for our presentation and tour. The tour took us through several key locations on the OSU campus, including the new business building, the North and South Engineering buildings, Edmond Low Library, and two different dorm styles. We also had the chance to visit the Colvin Recreation Center and the Student Union, with the impressive Boone Pickens Stadium looming in the background.
The tour lasted approximately two hours, and it's worth noting that it involves a fair amount of walking, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Overall, the tour is a great way to get a sense of the OSU campus and its many offerings, from state-of-the-art research facilities to top-notch recreation and residential options. Following our extensive tour of Oklahoma State University, we made a brief stop at Chick Fil A for a quick bite to eat before embarking on the next leg of our journey. Our destination was Fayetteville, Arkansas, where we planned to tour the campus of the University of Arkansas the following day.
After a long day on the road, we were relieved to arrive at the Inn at Carnall Hall, a charming hotel located on the University of Arkansas campus. We then headed to Grub's for a delicious dinner before retiring to our hotel room for some much-needed rest.
With two days of campus tours behind us, we knew that we needed to recharge our batteries in preparation for the final leg of our journey. So, we hit the hay early, eager for the adventures that awaited us in the coming day.

Day 4 - Tour of the University of Arkansas
Of the three campuses we visited in three days, the University of Arkansas had the smallest campus. The hour-long admissions presentation and tour did not include visits to the dorms, unlike Oklahoma University and OSU. The tour covered a number of attractions, such as Senior Walk, Old Main, Chi Omega Greek Theatre, Spoofer's Stone, and Arkansas Union. We passed by four buildings dedicated to engineering and the architecture buildings. My daughter was intrigued by the architecture program, which requires a study abroad in Rome to graduate from the program. Although we did not tour the rec center or any of the sport facilities, we could see them from the top of the mountain, including the Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The weather during the tour was cool and dry. The campus, located in the mountains, was breathtakingly beautiful.
Senior Walk
Senior Walk is a unique and cherished tradition at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is a sidewalk that runs through the heart of the campus, lined with over 170,000 names of graduates who have received degrees from the university since the first graduating class of 1876.
