My wife and I were invited to attend the 70th Anniversary of Wholesale Electric; a family owned business located in Houston, Texas. The evening included crawfish, fried catfish, potatoes, corn, and beer. Performing at the party was Texas's own Cory Morrow. Watching Cory and his band play a 2 hour, non-stop set, made me think about mastering my craft.
In Malcom Gladwell's book Outliers, he states that anyone can master a skill with 10,000 hours of practice. It is often said, "time on task over time" will equal a desired outcome. When I look at my coaching practice since 2010, I've booked over 10,000 hours in coaching sessions with business owners. When a coaching client says that I taught a particular script with ease, or I make a skill like time management seem so easy, what they are really experiencing is the result of working on a skill with over 10,000 hours of practice.
Are you a new business owner? If so, give yourself time. Often times when speaking with individuals new to a business, they are wanting results to show up today. They've not put in the time. There is a lot of experience gained by time on task. It will take time to master your craft so don't give up too soon. Establish a plan, execute, and be willing to refine and pivot. Learn from others, and hiring a coach can help you get there faster; even so, you will still need to put in the time on task.
Are you an experienced business owner? Are the results not showing up like they once were, or do you find yourself hitting a natural or created ceiling of achievement? Maybe shifting your focus to a new activity, mastering a new area in your business is what you need to lay the ground work for today. Yes, that might mean starting at 0 hours, and it also might be the one thing that must happen to have a shift in your business.
See, I believe that we truly never master our craft. Even thinking about Cory Morrow and his approach to music, I am sure he is always refining, always working beyond what he has mastered. What are your thoughts on being the master of your craft? More importantly, how might coaching help you do this faster? Connect with me today if you would like to learn more.
