Do Good Things

Do good things.

I came across this verse this morning; Galatians 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." This verse hit me in knowing that in the journey of doing good, what comes back from it might not be immediate. To have a harvest, first one must find the right field with the best soil, work the soil, plant the appropriate seed that will grow in that particular environment, water the soil, and then patiently wait. Only in time will there be something to harvest.

"Let us not become weary" gets me thinking about impatience. Our world turns so fast today that it seems like things happen in an instant. Think about fast food at McDonald's. You order at a squawk box, and 30 seconds later you have a Big Mac, fries, and a drink launched towards your driver's side window. Our impatience in life is what leads us to become weary. We want things to happen now and not later. The energy spent in our lives trying to force immediate results is absolutely draining.

What has happened to our discipline? What has happened to knowing that good things will come in time as long as we do our part? What has happened to being okay with being present and satisfied with planting the seed of doing something good today?

What if doing good things was our sole focus?

Doing good things as a follower of Christ.
Doing good things as a spouse.
Doing good things as a father or mother.
Doing good things as a business owner.
Doing good things as a neighbor.
Doing good things for the sake of others and not ourselves.
Doing good things for ourselves so that we can do for others.

I believe our world would be a better place. There would be less bickering and infighting. Doing good would suppress that which is evil. Doing good would be an internal motivator, and we would stop seeking outside motivators which only can leave a temporary impression. Doing good would lead to a harvest which we might not even be able to fathom at this time.

My coach, Chad Hyams is a co-host on a podcast Win Make Give, and he ends every episode with "do good". Maybe that seed planted by the way he wraps his podcast has been planted in my life for a harvest. I ask the question again, "What if doing good things was our sole focus?" I 100% believe that a focus on "doing good" in any aspect of our lives can lead to some amazing outcomes as long as we remain patient and trust in Him.

Who wants to "do good" with me today and going forward?
